Districts generally refer to this as Fund Balance or Fund Equity.

A fund balance provides financial stability and helps districts manage unexpected costs and timing differences in state funding.

The district's goal is to maintain an adequate fund balance to protect operations and avoid unnecessary short-term borrowing. Parchment has historically needed to manage the timing gap between expenditures and state funding during the summer and early fall.

The district estimates that summer borrowing costs approximately $60,000 annually.

Importantly, a healthy fund balance is not intended to be used as a substitute for long-term capital funding. Using operating dollars or reserves for major building projects would reduce the resources available for classroom instruction, staffing, student support, and other ongoing educational needs.
