The district has engaged in multiple processes to analyze student achievement data and identify contributing factors. Several themes have emerged and are reflected in the Strategic Plan.
School readiness
Some students are entering kindergarten with fewer foundational skills than in previous years. Additionally, some students do not enter a traditional school setting until first grade or later, including students who have been homeschooled or participated in virtual programs.
To address this, the district has expanded partnerships and access to early learning opportunities, including GSRP and KC Ready 4s.
Post-COVID engagement and achievement
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the district saw significant declines in engagement and measured proficiency, particularly at the secondary level.
The district's response includes renewed attention to instructional consistency, assessment, intervention, attendance, student engagement, and school improvement planning.
Staff recruitment, retention, and capacity
The district has experienced a significant number of retirements and other staffing changes over the past several years.
In response, Parchment has expanded partnerships with teacher development programs, implemented mentoring for new teachers, and partnered with Kalamazoo RESA to provide coaching and individualized support for new educators.
More than 30 staff members celebrated their fifth anniversary with the district this past year, reflecting progress in retaining newer members of our staff.
